Rugby Golf Club celebrated its Centenary in the 1990's, a proud year for a very welcoming club which is built on one of the smallest plots of land possible for an 18 hole course.

From its lofty vantage point, the clubhouse looks out over the fine course and its backdrop of the historical viaduct which separates the two areas of holes. Rugby is to be found barely a mile from the Town Centre, to the North East. The railway line (whose bridge you pass over just before you reach the club) comes into play on several holes, notably the 9th, one of the toughest par 3's you will ever play. With 7 par 3's, iron play is so important to score well at Rugby. However, the par of 68 should not lead your to think the course is easy and that you will only be playing shorter clubs.

There are plenty of holes where accurate driving will set you up for much easier approaches than you would have from playing conservatively, especially for the 3 par 5's which are as strong holes as you will find on any course in the Midlands. When you climb the hill back to the Clubhouse, the only real gradient you will find on the course, you will be welcomed with wonderful home cooked catering and views from both tees (and the 18th green), and guaranteed plenty of entertainment from members and visitors at this busy club as they start and finish their rounds.

Accuracy is all important at several holes at Rugby, and the 1st and 2nd are two such holes. A very good drive can find the green at the par four 1st but miss and the pitch is very tricky. There is water on both side of the 2nd and a carry (plus trees) to avoid for a chance at a birdie on the par 5 second. The 3rd is the first of the 3's. Its followed by a par 5 which is reachable, then another 3. The 7th is the first of a number of excellent short par 4's Its reachable with the perfect and bravest long drive but most will try to leave a mid iron approach on the flattest part of the fairway and follow it with a clever pitch.

The 8th is a hole where players can really open their shoulders. Its followed by two par 3's in a row, completely different holes, one a short pitch to a well bunkered green the other a golfers best (and straightest) wood or perhaps a long iron. 10 is more difficult than it looks, 11 and 12 are two par 3's then after a short walk through the viaduct, the next three holes are perhaps the key to a good round. They are a strong par 4, then 3 and a 5 where par is a good score. The 16th through to the 18th are a run of par 4's from the farthest part of the course back to the clubhouse. Each is longer and more difficult than its predecessor. 16 and 17 have water left and OOB right whilst 18 needs a good drive and an approach to the front left of the green, a shot which will run down onto the green and leave two putts in front of the clubhouse - a great finish.
